Moving? Avoid These Mistakes.

Moving? Avoid These Mistakes.

You’ve thought of everything: the friends to help you, money for the pizza and beer, the boxes and rolls of tape… Despite all your planning, you will soon realize that moving never goes exactly as planned.

To help ensure that your move goes as smoothly as possible, here are a few mistakes you should avoid making.

Freezer still frozen

If you forget to defrost your freezer and clean it out, you will spend hours with a hair dryer trying to remove the ice on moving day. With no time to lose on this hectic day, be sure to plan this task ahead of time!

Overfilled boxes

Some people believe that the fewer boxes they have to carry, the less time it will take to move. This is not always the case. Your move will take much longer if you end up doing it all by yourself because the two friends helping you strained their back while lifting boxes that were too heavy. Tell yourself that a set of encyclopedias and a microwave oven do not belong in one box…

Identifying boxes with vague terms

Family and friends don’t mind helping you, but they probably want to get this over with as quickly as possible. They will not bother to check the contents of boxes identified as “knickknacks” or “stuff”. If you have several poorly identified boxes, you will lose a lot of time setting up your new home.

Furniture that is disassembled… must be reassembled!

Instructions for assembling furniture are often thrown out once it has been assembled; it is therefore important to take notes if you need to disassemble and reassemble certain pieces. The screws and small parts should be gathered in baggies that are well-identified and the steps for assembling the item should be noted.

Moving? Avoid These Mistakes.

Rush hour

If you’re not moving on July 1, remember to take rush hour into account. The day is short and you don’t want to waste time sitting in traffic… especially if you’re moving from the North Shore to the South Shore!

Is newspaper sufficient?

For plates that you’re stacking on top of each other, yes. However, for your collection of teacups that have sentimental value, no. It doesn’t take much longer to wrap your fragile and valuable items in bubble wrap.

Moving your plants

You’ve surely spent a lot of time caring for your plants and it would be a shame to throw them out because they did not survive the move. The worst thing to do is place them in the moving truck. Plan to use the back seat of your car to transport any plants you may have.

What to do with Fido

Will your pet be taken care of while you move? Will he or she require medication for the move? You won’t have time to clean the car if Fido is sick… For the well-being of your pet – and your own well-being – don’t forget to make the necessary arrangements!

In summary

A successful move depends of the stress level of everyone involved. The more organized you are, the smoother your move will go.

Good luck!
