Natural Pools: 5 Things You Should Know

Natural Pools: 5 Things You Should Know

There are many advantages to a natural pool. But before you take the plunge, there are a few things you should know.

1. Divide the pool into zones

A natural pool must be divided into four zones in order to maintain the balance of the ecosystem and ensure a natural purification: a central swimming area, a filter area, an oxygenation area and a regeneration area. A specialized landscaper will be able to design the perfect natural pool for your yard.

2. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight

Because a blazing sun accelerates algae growth, a natural pool must be built in a shady area and it must be protected with floating plants, usually water lilies. The recommended temperature is therefore a bit cooler, at 75° F.

3. Share your pool with plants and insects

The ecosystem of the natural basin will naturally include the presence of small animals, plants and mosquitoes. Don’t try to get rid of them, as they are necessary for cleaning the water by circulating it and by feeding on the algae and harmful insects. However, avoid putting fish in your natural pool; they generate more waste than the pool can absorb.

4. Connect with nature

The floor of the pool will become covered with a thin film that is slightly slippery. These are the plants that grow at the bottom of the natural wall of the pool. It’s perfectly normal but it can be surprising for someone who is used to the smooth blue canvas of a traditional swimming pool. Think of it like a swim in the lake!

5. Be sure to respect applicable laws

In Québec, the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act applies to natural pools. This means that, among other things, your pool must have a ladder or stairs to get into or out of the water, and the pool must be surrounded by a fence or security wall.
