Tips for Reducing Your Energy Consumption

Tips for Reducing Your Energy Consumption

Before buying a home, you will certainly want to ensure that you will not be stuck paying exorbitant electricity bills. Your real estate broker can help you determine the average monthly electrical costs of the property you’re interested in.

Factors that affect energy consumption

Several factors can affect the temperature in your home. The most obvious is the outside temperature, which is out of our control. However, other factors are specific to the home, such as the type of heating, the age of the doors and windows, the type of insulation, etc. Lifestyle also plays a role in your home’s energy consumption level: taking long showers, leaving electronic devices turned on uselessly, or excessively heating unoccupied rooms are just a few examples.

Simple changes and a few adjustments can help to substantially decrease your electricity bill:

Replace your incandescent lightbulbs with CFL bulbs. Buy light fixtures that have the ENERGY STAR logo. And, most importantly, don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room!

Insulation and heating

An easy way to verify your home’s insulation is to place a candle next to the doors and windows. If the flame flickers, it means it is poorly insulated. Simply purchase caulking materials in order to seal air leaks and thereby reduce your heating bill.

Replacing all of your mechanical thermostats with electrical thermostats can also help you save between 15 and 20% in electricity costs, as they are much more accurate. If you’re not able to replace them all, focus on the rooms where heating is most needed, which are usually the common living areas. Furthermore, avoid placing furniture in front of a heating source, so that you don’t block air circulation. And finally, on sunny days, open the blinds and curtains so that the sun can heat your rooms naturally during the winter months. The opposite would apply in the summer months if you have an air conditioner.

Install devices that save water and energy

Install reduced flow shower heads and faucets. By reducing the flow of hot water, for example, you will be saving energy.
